Flagstaff Preventive Dental Care
Keeping your smile whole and healthy is always a top priority for the Flagstaff Downtown Dental team. We create personalized oral health care plans for each patient we see, and no matter what the patient’s other dental care needs, preventive dental care is essential. That all starts with six month checkups and professional teeth cleanings, and we may also recommend a number of other preventive treatments to keep your smile whole and healthy. Dental Checkups and Cleanings
Dental checkups should be kept at least two times a year. Patients who struggle with gum disease or frequent decay may need to visit us more often to ensure they maintain the optimal level of oral health. At every appointment, we’ll screen for common oral health concerns both visually and using advanced diagnostic technologies. Our dentists are looking for the early indicators of numerous dental conditions including tooth decay, gum disease, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, teeth grinding, and oral cancer. One of our skilled hygienists will thoroughly clean even the hardest to access parts of teeth. Then, Dr. John Bacon will walk you through any areas for concern we discovered in our assessment, answer your questions, outline treatment options, and help you choose the solution that best fits your oral health needs and goals. These regular dental checkups are an essential aspect of every treatment plan for patients at Flagstaff Downtown Dental. On your way out, we’ll even provide you with a free toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and instruction at no charge.
Nightguards for Bruxism
If you grind or clench your teeth during sleep, you may think this common oral health condition is nothing more than a bad habit. However, known as bruxism, this oral health concern can cause a number of adverse effects including dental wear, chips, and cracks. To protect smiles from this potential damage, we custom craft oral appliances called nightguards. These comfortable mouthguards place a physical barrier between the rows of teeth protecting your smile from potential damage.
Oral Cancer Screening
To protect our patients from potentially deadly oral cancer, we complete careful screenings for the disease as part of each six month dental checkup. This is especially important for patients who use tobacco products, drink heavily, or have any form of the human papilloma virus, as these are all factors that increase risk for oral cancer. However, as much as 30% of patients diagnosed with oral cancer do not engage in any of these high risk behaviors.
Fluoride treatments are an excellent preventive dentistry option for young patients who are still learning to care for their smiles, adults who are prone to decay, or those who have experienced significantly diminished tooth enamel. We can apply professional fluoride treatment as part of any six month checkup. We simply put a thin coating of fluoride onto the surfaces of teeth, and as it seeps into the porous tooth structure, tooth enamel is hardened.
Oral Hygiene Products
If you’re having trouble keeping your smile cavity free or you struggle with gum disease, we may recommend prescription oral hygiene products. This could include toothpastes and mouthwashes with higher levels of fluoride for those patients with frequent decay. We may also prescribe antimicrobial oral rinses to reduce the amount of plaque producing oral bacteria that can lead to both decay and gum disease. One of our knowledgeable team members can also describe or demonstrate the most effective at-home hygiene techniques.
