Dental Amalgam Fillings

Dental Amalgam is a commonly used dental filling that has been used for over 150 years. It is a mixture of silver, mercury and at least one other metal.

Although Dr. Bacon, Dr. Stowell and Dr. Blane do not use amalgam routinely, there are some indications for amalgam.  An area that can’t be kept dry, in the filling process may benefit from an amalgam.

In our Flagstaff office, it is common to use a rubber dam during dental procedures to help avoid the ingestion of any dental materials (such as mercury).

Some insurance companies pay more for a silver filling than for a tooth colored filling.  If there is a difference in cost to the patient, our office will present both fees prior to treatment. Ultimately Dr. Bacon, Dr. Stowell or Dr. Blane will let each patient decide for themselves their preference.  

The American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs has concluded that both amalgam and composite materials are considered safe and effective for tooth restoration.
